Award Criteria

San Patricio International School Model United Nations (SPISMUN) aims to foster student leadership and teamwork while addressing real-world issues and developing practical solutions. Distinguished participation awards will be presented to three delegates per committee. To be eligible for awards, delegates must:

  1. Submit their position paper by the deadline (April 1, 2024). It should be properly formatted, well-written, and thoroughly researched.
  2. Adhere to the rules and procedures outlined in the Conduct Code. It is important to note that any undiplomatic conduct or comments, failure to comply with the dress code, or tardiness may result in a warning. As previously mentioned, if a participant continues such behavior, further disciplinary action may be taken, depending on the situation, and may impact their eligibility for an award

SPISMUN Award Criteria is divided into four important stages to consider:

I- Participation

Participation will be evaluated by the chair in a respectful environment, this is followed within the speaker list, moderated and unmoderated caucuses, resolutions, and the crises as well.

*Active participation during the simulation should contribute to the committee’s pursuit of stronger and more effective solutions to be considered for award eligibility.

II- Leadership Attributes

This category evaluates delegates on their ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively for negotiation and inspiration, which includes consensus-building and problem-solving. It also considers their capacity to promote proposals strategically, integrating the perspectives of the entire committee.

III- Rhetorical Skills

This category assesses rhetorical skills demonstrated during the debate by evaluating mastery in effective communication. This includes the ability to articulate their country’s policies accurately, employ leadership attributes to persuade fellow delegates toward their position, validate arguments convincingly, and collaborate constructively despite differences, all with the goal of working together to find solutions to the presented problems.

IV- Knowledge

Recognizing that the Model UN program is an educational platform, delegates are expected to possess a solid understanding of their country’s policies, which may vary depending on the topic and committee. It is assumed that delegates rely on reliable and verifiable sources of information. This category assesses the depth of knowledge related to the topic, which is utilized to inform and contribute to the debate, including the proposal of creative and innovative solutions alongside well-developed strategies.

At the conclusion of the conference, Chairs and Co-Chairs will evaluate the debate participation point totals (considering the award criteria) to rank the delegations/secretaries in each individual committee.

V- Chair’s Criteria

While all the previous award criteria are significant, the chair’s judgment also plays a crucial role in determining which delegates will be recognized. Therefore, it is essential to demonstrate respect towards the authority figures within your committee and avoid any behavior that might be perceived as authoritarian by other delegates or the chair during the conference. Keep in mind that the award selection process is not solely based on the point system, so it is advisable to maintain this awareness throughout the simulation.
